2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vintage Report: A Vintage You Don’t Want to Miss!

2019 Brunello di Montalcino is “…the vintage we’ve all been waiting for,” so “Buckle your seatbelts,” and strap on your helmets because the newest vintage from Montalcino is “…an embarrassment of riches for collectors and fans of the appellation” (Eric Guido, Vinous Media). The hotly anticipated Brunellos have “…definitely lived up to [their] lofty reputation as an excellent vintage across Montalcino” (Kerin O’Keefe). It showcases the extraordinary qualities of Sangiovese, Tuscany’s most famous and beloved grape variety, and its ability to exploit the region’s phenomenal terroir. This “…magical year…” (Giacomo Neri of Casanova di Neri) of “radiance and appeal” (Eric Guido) will likely set a new benchmark for Brunello wines for years to come.

According to Italian wine expert, Kerin O’Keefe, she has “…never tasted so many drop-dead-gorgeous young Brunellos from a single vintage.” She confesses that many of the best wines stopped her in her tracks, generating that “…magical moment

  1. A Mountainous Red for All Seasons

A Mountainous Red for All Seasons

Nusserhof's 2007 Lagrein RiservaAlto Adige is one of the northernmost regions in Italy, with vineyards located at the base of the scenic Dolomites and Italian Alps.  This allows for a long ripening season with large diurnal temperature variation providing perfect conditions for wines with wonderful aromatics, great acidity and excellent minerality.

So when Antonio Galloni posted his report on the wines of Alto Adige in May, I looked through it searching for a handful of their whites to add to our inventory with the summer weather approaching.  To my surprise what piqued my interest most was a red wine that scored 94 points for under $30 that he called “without question one of the most compelling expressions of this indigenous grape” ~ Nusserhof’s 2007 Lagrein Riserva.

Lagrein is best known as a food-friendly red wine that pairs wonderfully with hearty stews, braises, and aged mountain cheeses.  For most it is a winter wine, or at least enjoyed during the

  2. 2008 Barolos Rock!

    2008 Barolos Rock!

Elio GrassoPiedmont is known for two red wine types: Barolo and Barbaresco. The newly released 2008 Barolo vintage is now available, and we've found ourselves sampling quite a few wines from this vintage. One thing is for certain, Barolo winemakers hit a homerun with the 2008s, as they did with the 2007s. The wines we've tasted are massive powerhouses that are built for the long haul. The 2008 vintage has the ability to age 20+ years.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate had this to say about the 2008 Barolos: "...The 2008 Baroli have turned out far better than I originally expected. They are for the most part gracious, medium-bodied wines that are highly expressive of site and full of character. The best 2008s are thrilling..." - The Wine Advocate

Over the weekend, we opened a bottle of 2008 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Vigna Casa Mate, a super high-scoring wine awarded 98+ points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate. We paired it with something simple:

  3. SUMMER! Bring It On!

    SUMMER! Bring It On!

2009 Antica ChardonnayFor practical reasons, we gravitate to the lighter side of things during the summer whether it's shoes or wine. I'll leave the shoe talk for Esquire and Vogue, but I want to reintroduce the fantastic 2009 Antica Chardonnay (94 Points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate) to you.

This Napa, California gem gives much hope to those who think they may not/do not like California Chardonnay (or anything white for that matter). I am a full on red kind of guy, but whites this good are to be appreciated and enjoyed as well, and there is a lot of both to go around. It's light in the sense that it's perfect for summer. This very well may be the bottle of white that can turn you!

Earthy characteristics are in here for sure. There is mineral overtone that you don't often find in a California Chardonnay. It could even be considered more like a White Burgundy due to this aspect.  There is no butter

  4. The Perfect Summer Sippers

    The Perfect Summer Sippers

Perfect Summer SippersSummer is in full swing, and I love to have nice, crisp white wines around for this season. These types of whites are extremely versatile and are very refreshing for the summer heat. And the best part is that you don't even need food! These summertime sippers are great on their own, or you can pair them with anything from the bounty of the sea to grilled delights.

I have two white wines in mind right now that are perfect for this season's festivities:

2010 Domaine du Haut Bourg Muscadet Cotes de Grandlieu Sur Lie - $12.99/bottle, and 2010 Domaine des Vieux Pruniers Sancerre - $17.99/bottle.

Both of these wines have an amazing balance of fruit and acidity. Granny Smith apples, lemon zest, honeydew, melon and minerals are just a few of the lovely aromas and flavors that you'll find in these wines. Bordering on tart, either of these whites will leave your mouth

'09 Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne - A Summer White that Delivers Satisfaction!

Summer White Wine that Delivers SatisfactionEvery summer, we look for a new, super fresh White Burgundy wine that we can rely on to show incredibly well at our clients' most important events, gatherings and cocktail parties. This summer, one of our top picks for a white wine that will definitely make a big impression is 2009 Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne. Louis Latour is a favorite among many collectors and wine lovers, and the 2009 vintage showcases not only the talent of the producer, but also highlights the overall tremendous quality of the 2009 vintage.

2009 White Burgundies have attracted a lot of attention from wine critics. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate said this, "...The 2009 harvest yielded a large number of delicious white Burgundies, many of which will drink beautifully with virtually no cellaring..."

A Grand Cru White Burgundy, the 2009 Louis Latour Corton Charlemagne is an amazing wine and compared to many other Grand Cru White Burgundies of this pedigree, it is relatively inexpensive with

  6. Two Incredible & Affordable Wines for Grilling Season!

Two Incredible & Affordable Wines for Grilling Season!

2006 Domaine Do Bibei LalamaPost Memorial Day represents the kick-off of the BEST time of year: grilling season! It's time to dig out the charcoal from the far corners of your garage because your grill is screaming for attention. Not only can I start wearing white jeans, but I can also start planning my summertime menu comprised of fresh herbs, veggies and whatever my back yard has to offer. I am one happy girl!

In anticipation of doing a lot of entertaining this summer, I've (naturally) stocked my cellar to the brim with grill-friendly values including 2011 D'esclans Whispering Angel Rose and 2007 Waterstone, but what about a mid-level priced wine for that special occasion or holiday? I've set out to find two exceptional and affordable bottles that will definitely impress your guests. Here's what I found!

At only $54.99 a bottle, you'd be hard pressed to find a more focused, classic Chassagne Montrachet. Medium-bodied on the palate with hints of

  7. A 1982 First Growth - A Legendary Bottle!

    A 1982 First Growth - A Legendary Bottle!

1982 First GrowthIt is any wine lover's dream to have the privilege to drink a bottle from Bordeaux from the legendary 1982 vintage.  Some may have the opportunity to do this more often than others and yet, some may never get the chance.  I guarantee you that if you love wine and the chance presents itself, you, as I would never turn it down.

Recently, I was out at a great friend's house and the whisper of 1982 started.  Next thing you know, a bottle from the pristine cellar was picked: 1982 Haut Brion! My friend and I admired the bottle and laughed that neither of us had been fortunate enough to try a First Growth from 1982. Often times we will glance at a bottle and think, "This is not the right time," or "I am waiting for a special occasion to open this bottle." I learned this new acronym recently that I really like - YOLO: You Only Live Once.  There is no better time than the present because you never know what tomorrow

  8. Strawberry-Rhubarb Crisp

    Strawberry-Rhubarb Crisp

Strawberry Rhubarb CrispI've always had a fruit crisp on my dessert menu at The Plaza Café, which varies depending on the season. Since local strawberries are currently in season, I thought this was an appropriate fruit crisp to feature now. 9. 2011 Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra Combines Great Taste & Affordability!

2011 Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra Combines Great Taste & Affordability!

Great Taste & AffordabilityUpon recently opening one of our new arrival wines, 2011 Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra, the first thing I noticed about it was the care and passion that went into its creation.  With a good winemaker, that care and passion will be the driving force to quality, and that is exactly what we have here with the 2011 Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra.  Then, factor in the $9.99 price tag, and you have a 100% Grenache at an unbeatable value which makes it perfect for everyday drinking.  This wine truly combines affordability and great taste giving you the best of both worlds!

With a score of 91 points from Robert Parker, he called this wine "...a killer value..." Parker also said that "...at these ridiculously low prices, consumers will never suspect the wines are at this level of quality..." This is a value that you must try! This wine tastes like it costs at least 3-4x the actual price.

This Spanish delight is the product of old vines and concrete aging.

2009 Waterstone Cabernet Has Arrived, & It's Awesome!

2009 Waterstone has ArrivedThe seventh vintage of our highly coveted Waterstone Cabernet Sauvignon has arrived - and it is nothing short of remarkable!

It's always exciting around the office when a new vintage releases. Everyone has something different to say in comparison to the previous vintages - yet this year, I think that we all agreed that the 2009, which was rated the top Waterstone in history by James Suckling, might be the best we've tasted thus far.

I tasted the 2009 and 2007 back to back. In my opinion, the 2009 was presently more approachable than the 2007. The climate and weather conditions for the 2009 vintage may help to support my case!

    Vintage
The 2009 vintage proved to be an outstanding year for the majority of the winemaking world.

In California, 2009 was hit with a cool, mild growing season without huge variations in temperature or damaging weather conditions. Also, a general lack of rain
